We hear people say, “Be strong,” all the time. Keep going. Push through it. Take care of everybody else.
But what happens when the strong person needs somebody too?
Sometimes saying “I’m not okay” is one of the hardest things to say. You may not even know how to explain what you are feeling. You just know something is not right.
And even when you decide to ask for help, another question comes up: Where do I start?
As a healthcare professional and advocate, I believe asking questions matters. Knowing what medications you are taking matters. Understanding what your provider is telling you matters. Knowing where to go when you need additional support matters.
Most importantly, your voice matters.
That is why I created I’M NOT OKAY: A Resource & Checklist for a Stronger Tomorrow.
Why I Created This Resource
I wanted to create something people could actually use.
Not something you read once and forget about.
This is a checklist you can take with you when you are preparing for an appointment. You can use it to write down questions for your provider or pharmacist. You can look at it when you are trying to figure out what resources may be available to you at school, at work, or in your community.
It also includes information about medication safety, postpartum mental health warning signs, crisis and support resources, and patient advocacy.
Sometimes we do not know what questions to ask until somebody gives us a place to start.
This is your place to start.
You Have the Right to Ask Questions
If you do not understand something your provider tells you, ask again.
If you have questions about a medication, ask.
If something does not feel right, speak up.
If you need somebody to help you understand your healthcare information or prepare for an appointment, it is okay to ask for support.
You do not have to sit quietly because you are afraid of asking too many questions.
I would rather you ask twice than leave confused once.
Let’s Keep the Conversation Going
Mental health is also one of the conversations we are having on Where Your Voices Matter Podcast.
We created our Listening Circle because some conversations need more than a quick answer. We talk about the things happening in our homes, our relationships, our communities, and our healthcare experiences.
We may not always agree, but we can listen.
And sometimes being heard is where healing begins.
